Indian markets have been very volatile in 2025 so far. While the Nifty 50 stands only 0.2% lower compared to the start of the year, the range has been wide. Broader markets have eroded as much as 10% so far this year.
Amidst this volatility, some sectors and stocks have shown strength while the market capitalisation of some has tumbled.
Market Recap Of 2025 So Far
As of Feb. 5, the Nifty 50 is down 0.2% compared to the start of 2025. While that may not seem like much, the markets have remained very volatile, with the benchmark hitting as high as 24,226.7 and as low as 22,786.9. That’s a range of 1,440 points.
In contrast, broader markets have underperformed—the Nifty Midcap 150 index has fallen 5.89% while the Nifty Smallcap 250 has corrected 10% so far in 2025.
Large caps have lost approximately Rs 4.64 lakh crore in market capitalisation, while the midcap and small cap spaces have lost Rs 5.47 lakh crore and Rs 3.3 lakh crore in market capitalisation, respectively.
Note: The above figures reflect market capitalisation for NSE-listed companies, encompassing the top 100 as large caps, the subsequent 150 as mid caps, and the following 250 as small caps.
Sectoral Winners: As Per Market Capitalization
NDTV Profit calculations reveal that the five sectors that have collectively gained the most market capitalisation so far in 2025 include automobiles, finance, telecom services, oil, and chemical petrochemicals.

Whereas the three stocks that have lost the most market capitalisation in 2025 so far include HCL Tech, Trent, and ITC.
