The White House said that only about half of what’s coming from Mexico is USMCA compliant, so that means the other half is getting tariffs at 25%. But Sheinbaum here says that if Mexico doesn’t put tariffs on what’s coming form the US, then the US won’t put tariffs on what’s coming from Mexico.

What she’s saying makes sense but let’s see what happens.

I think some of this is a paperwork issues as Mexico’s economy minister said 85-90% of trade from Mexico to the US could be made eligible under USMCA requirements. He said around 10-12% of companies could have difficulties complying with USMCA but they will work with them in the coming 3 weeks to help them comply. He noted that the auto sector is the area with the most significant part of the group that isn’t compliant.
