Apple is expected to launch its next-generation AirTag tracker sometime in 2025. The device—likely to be called AirTag 2—will use a new ultrawide-band chip that is comparable to the one in the iPhone 15, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
Apple has not made the new AirTag official yet, but rumours have it that it will provide several improvements over the 2021 model, even though the design is expected to be similar to the existing one.
The second-generation device, which is code-named B589, is anticipated to provide improved accuracy, privacy and range with the new chip. According to Gurman, the Precision Finding range should be significantly expanded by the new UB chip. It is claimed that this will make tracking and finding items simpler.
Currently, an item with an AirTag attached can be found anywhere between 10 and 30 metres away, depending on specific circumstances. According to Gurman, that range is anticipated to triple with the new UB chip.
Apple’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 versions already come with the Precision Finding. The feature enables users track their friends in busy places, and has a range of around 60 metres (200 feet). The AirTag 2 will reportedly have a similar tracking range.
To “make the new model more tamper-proof”, the updated device will also enhance privacy features. Apple will make it more difficult to take the speaker out of the AirTag, which was being done with the older device by people to stalk someone.
According to reports, Apple may release the AirTag 2 in June or July of 2025. The company is also expected to release a new smart home display at the same time.
