The recent stock market dip has left many new investors rattled, but personal-finance influencer Sharan Hegde has asserted that there is “no reason” to panic.

At its core, investing is a leap of faith, Hegde told NDTV Profit. “It’s like being in a relationship — you never know if the person you’re with is the one you’ll marry.”

Just as relationships require trust and patience, so does investing with a financial adviser. “You’re never going to be absolutely sure — unless you work with them, you don’t know,” Hegde said.

Hegde drew a sharp contrast between short-term and long-term investors, emphasising that while portfolios of those investing for just a year or two might be in the red, seasoned investors with a decade-long horizon remain comfortably in the green.

Hegde dismissed fears of a bear market, citing the US market in the 1980s, which saw a stagnation of nearly eight years. “It’s just been a couple of months. We need to calm down,” he said, adding that investing required emotional discipline and a long-term vision.

A strong advocate of diversification, Hegde balances his equity-heavy portfolio with investments in gold, crypto and other asset classes. He also acknowledged the growing influence of unregistered stock experts. The key, he stressed, is finding someone who actively listens rather than blindly following internet advice.

Ultimately, Hegde underscored that financial management is not just about handling money, it is also about managing emotions.
