After Bharti Airtel Ltd., Reliance’s Jio Platforms Ltd. has signed an agreement with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring Starlink’s high-speed satellite-based internet services to India, according to a statement by the company.
“Jio will not only offer Starlink equipment in its retail outlets but will establish a mechanism to support customer service installation and activation,” the company said in a statement on Wednesday.
As part of the partnership, Jio and SpaceX will offer broadband services across India, including the most rural and remote regions. This includes plans to offer Starlink equipment via its retail stores. The Starlink solutions will also be available through its online storefronts.
The Reliance-owned telecom company expects Starlink to complement JioAirFiber and JioFiber, by enhancing its speed and covering more challenging locations in a quick and affordable manner.
This marks Starlink’s second agreement in India, though it remains subject to regulatory approvals for SpaceX to offer its services in the country.
Bharti Airtel also signed a similar deal with SpaceX on Tuesday. As part of the partnership, Airtel and SpaceX will explore ways to complement and expand Airtel’s existing services through Starlink’s satellite connectivity.
This includes plans to offer Starlink equipment via Airtel’s retail stores, deliver services to business and enterprise customers, and connect underserved communities, schools, and healthcare centres in rural and remote parts of India.
In June 2023, Elon Musk had expressed interest in launching Starlink in India, during a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Starlink could be “incredibly helpful” in delivering internet to remote villages that lack on-ground infrastructure, he had said.
