Banks across Maharashtra will remain closed on account of Maha Shivratri on Wednesday, Feb. 26. Maha Sivratri, dedicated to Lord Shiva is among the most significant festivals in the Hindu religion. The day is observed as a public holiday across many states in India including Maharashtra.
According to the RBI holiday calendar, banking activities that require the functioning of branches will remain suspended on the day. However, online banking, UPI and ATM facilities will be available to customers. Banks will open again on Thursday, Feb. 27.
Bank holidays in India vary from state to state, depending upon the regional festivals and other observations. The Reserve Bank of India releases a holiday calendar at the start of the year, announcing the closures in each state and regional centres under which branches operate.
Customers are advised to contact their nearest bank branch for more clarity about the closure on Wednesday, Maha Shivratri. This will help them plan their banking activities and avoid any last-minute stress or confusion.

The RBI classifies banking holidays into three broad categories: holidays under the Negotiable Instruments Act, Real Time Gross Settlement Holidays, and Banks’ Closing of Accounts.
It is important to note that only the bank branches remain closed on bank holidays. Facilities such as net banking and ATMs continue to function as usual even on a bank holiday.

Maha Shivaratri is a Hindu festival celebrated in India, to honour Lord Shiva. Devotees often observe a day-long fast and visit Shiva temples to offer prayers, perform rituals, and chant mantras. The festival holds great significance in Hinduism and is believed to mark the day when Lord Shiva performed the cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction. It’s also believed to be the night when Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati.
