Stock Market Today: Nifty, Sensex Open Higher Before MPC Rate Decision; Airtel Top Gainer
The NSE Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex opened higher before Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee announces its decision on India’s benchmark repo rate. Bharti Airtel Ltd., HDFC Bank Ltd. share prices contributed the most to the gain.
As of 9:19 a.m., the Nifty 50 was trading 15.50 points or 0.07% down at 23,587.85, and the Sensex was trading 70.59 points or 0.1% down at 77,987.57.
“The market remains largely optimistic from the start, as indicated by the GIFT Nifty as well, underscoring a positive start for the benchmarks. We believe the market has already priced in the effect of a 25 bps rate cut in the past positive sessions during the week, thus any other deviation from expectations and commentary of the governor would serve as key parameters to gauge the market momentum,” said Ameya Ranadive, senior technical analysts, StoxBox.



Bharti Airtel Ltd., HDFC Bank Ltd., Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., Britannia Industries Ltd., and UltraTech Cement Ltd. added to the Nifty 50 index.
Reliance Industries Ltd., ITC Ltd., Power Grid Corp, Infosys Ltd., and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. weighed on the Nifty 50 index.

Market breadth was evenly split between buyers and sellers. Around 1,254 stocks declined, 1,207 stocks advanced, and 110 stocks remained unchanged on BSE.

Oil prices snapped a two-day declining streak on Friday. The oil prices have been declining on demand concern after the US announced that it will levy tariff on Mexico, Canada, and China. Market participants now await US January employment report.
