Stocks in the Asia-Pacific region fell on Monday as US President Donald Trump’s decision to announce 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum to all countries added jitters to the already volatile stocks.

Japan’s Nikkei was down 90 points, or 0.20% at 38,732, while South Korea’s Kospi fell 0.22%, or 6 points to 2,516 as of 6:30 a.m. Future contracts in China hinted at a positive stock start, while Hong Kong looks poised for losses.

US equities tumbled on Friday weighed by tariff impacts and speculations the Federal Reserve is in no rush to cut interest rates. Nonfarm payrolls rose 1.43 lakh in January after upward revisions to the prior two months.

The S&P 500 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite plunged 0.95% and 1.36%, respectively. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.28%.

The NSE Nifty 50 and BSE Sensex declined for three sessions in a row on Friday as ICICI Bank Ltd. and HDFC Bank Ltd. share prices dragged. However, on a weekly basis, both indices ended up for the second week.

Market participants parsed the Reserve Bank of India’s Monetary Policy Committee statement after the rate-setting panel cut the repo rate.

The NSE Nifty 50 ended 43.40 points or 0.18% down at 23,559.95 and the BSE Sensex settled 197.97 points or 0.25% lower at 77,860.19.

Foreign portfolio investors stayed net sellers of Indian equities for the third straight day on Friday as they offloaded stocks worth approximately Rs 470.4 crore.

Domestic institutional investors stayed net buyers for the third straight session as they mopped up equities worth Rs 454.2 crore, according to provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.

Indian rupee strengthened by 15 paise to close at 87.43 against the US dollar.

  • BHEL: The company received letter of award from MAHAGENCO for a Rs 8000 crore order. Order is for BTG package of Koradi Thermal Power Station, which consists of two 660 MW units.

  • Bharat Electronics: The company received orders worth Rs 962 crore order from Indian Navy.

  • Western Carriers: Gets work order worth Rs 1089 crore from Vedanta for logistics services.

  • Zaggle Prepaid: The company approved acquisition of a 16.67% stake in Mobileware Technologies from its promoter.

  • Gokaldas Exports: To acquire 13.3% shareholding in BRFL Textiles for a total of Rs 67.45 crore. The acquisition to be completed in 60 days.

  • Glenmark Pharma: The company received GST demand order worth Rs 121.25 crore including penalty.

  • Brainbees Solutions: The company will invest Rs 299.59 crore in unit Digital Age.

  • M&M: The automaker’s January production stood at 98,470 compared to 1.01 lakh in the same month last year.

  • Cipla: The company received ‘VAI’ for GMP inspection at company’s Virgonanagar facility between Nov. 7 and 13, 2024.

  • Tejas Networks: The company signed a technology collaboration agreements with NEC Corporation, Japan.

  • United Spirits: The company clarified that market rumours about closure of facility operations in one of the company’s unit is not entirely true. While currently the unit has no production activity, the it is still reviewing internal strategies, with no decision made till now. 

  • Ircon: The company received letter of acceptance by Central Railway for project worth Rs 194.45 crore.

  • Va Tech Wabag: The company won an order worth Rs 3,251 crore for Al Haer Independent Sewage Treatment Plant located in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

  • Welspun Corp: An associate company signed new contracts worth Rs 113 crore to set up new production line for helical submerged arc welded pipes. The new line will add 100,000 MTs to the existing nominal capacity of 400,000 MTs.

  • BHEL, Hitachi Energy India: The company received a letter of intent from Rajasthan Part I Power Transmission, an SPV under Adani Energy Solutions, for establishment of two terminal station of 6000 MW to transmit renewable energy from Bhadla III, Rajasthan and Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh. The order is to be executed by 2030.

IPO Offerings

  • Ajax Engineering: The initial public offering will be open for subscription from Feb. 10 to 12. The total issue size stands at Rs 1,269.35 crore and consists entirely of an offer for sale. The price band is set between Rs 599 to Rs 629 per share. The company is a manufacturer of a range of concrete equipment and services across the value chain.

Currency Update

The Indian rupee strengthened by 15 paise to close at 87.43 against the US dollar on Friday after the Reserve Bank of India cut the repo rate for the first time in five years.

Following the Monetary Policy Committee’s announcement, the local currency rose 25 paise to 87.33 against the greenback. It opened higher at 87.48 a dollar. The rupee had closed at 87.58 on Thursday, according to Bloomberg data.
