Most markets in Asia-Pacific were trading higher after China’s President Xi Jingping’s comments signalled support to the country’s private sector. The Nikkei 225 was 0.29% higher, and Kospi was flat as of 06:06 a.m. The S&P ASX 200 was 0.40% down.

Markets were closed in the US on the occasion of President’s Day.

Brent crude was trading 0.79% at $71.30 a barrel as of 5:57 a.m. The spot gold was trading 0.41% higher at $2,912.20 an ounce.

The GIFT Nifty was trading 0.07% or 17 points higher at 23,027.00 as of 1:29 a.m.

On Monday, India’s major equity indices paused their longest losing streak in two years, with shares of HDFC Bank Ltd. and Reliance Industries Ltd. providing assistance. Pharmaceutical and metal company’s stocks gained, but information technology and automobiles fell.

Following a shaky beginning and intraday recovery, the Nifty 50 closed 30.25 points, or 0.13% higher, at 22,959.5, while the Sensex closed 57.65 points, or 0.08% higher, at 75,996.86. Intraday, the Nifty slid 0.89% to below 22,800, while the Sensex dropped 0.85% to below 75,300.

The promising start to the week comes after the previous one, which saw the Nifty fall 2.8%, its lowest weekly session since December 2024.

Foreign portfolio investors remained net sellers of Indian equities for the ninth consecutive session on Monday, selling stocks worth around Rs 3,937.8 crore.

Domestic institutional investors remained net buyers for the ninth consecutive session, purchasing equities worth Rs 4,759.8 crore, according to provisional data from the National Stock Exchange.

The Indian rupee closed lower against the US dollar on Monday. The rupee fell by 2 paise to settle at Rs 86.85 against the greenback.
